Biography

Saint Anna An Xingshi was a married laywoman who lived in the apostolic vicariate of Southeastern Zhili, China during the Boxer Rebellion. She was born around 1828 in Anping, Hebei, China, and little is known about her early life. Anna An Xingshi was a devout Catholic and lived her faith with great dedication. She was known for her strong moral character, unwavering faith, and commitment to her family and community. In her role as a wife and mother, Anna exemplified the virtues of love, patience, and selflessness. During the Boxer Rebellion, a violent uprising against foreigners and Christians in China in the late 19th century, Anna's faith was put to the ultimate test. As the rebellion spread throughout the region, Christians faced persecution and hostility. Despite the dangers, Anna remained steadfast in her faith and refused to renounce her beliefs. On July 11, 1900, Anna An Xingshi was captured by the Boxers and brought to Liugongying, Shenzhou, Hebei, where she was ultimately beheaded for her refusal to abandon her Catholic faith. Her martyrdom was a testament to her incredible strength and unwavering commitment to her beliefs. The Catholic Church recognized Anna's martyrdom, and she was venerated on February 22, 1955, when Pope Pius XII issued a decree acknowledging her martyrdom. Later that year, on April 17, 1955, Pope Pius XII beatified her, recognizing her as Blessed Anna An Xingshi. Finally, on October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Anna An Xingshi, proclaiming her a saint of the Catholic Church. Her canonization serves as an inspiration to Catholics and all people of faith, reminding them of the importance of staying true to their beliefs in the face of adversity.
