Saint Angela Merici, born on March 21, 1474, in Desenzano, Lake Garda, Italy, was a devout Franciscan tertiary who went on to establish the Institute of Saint Ursula, also known as the Ursuline Sisters. At the age of 15, Angela received a vision that foretold her future role in inspiring devout women in their religious vocation.
During a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Crete, Angela was suddenly struck blind. Despite the hardships she faced, Angela's faith remained unwavering, and she insisted on continuing her pilgrimage with her companions. She visited the holy shrines with the same devotion and enthusiasm, even without her sight.
It was during her journey back home that Angela experienced a miraculous restoration of her sight. While praying before a crucifix, her vision was miraculously restored at the very same place where she had lost it. This powerful experience further strengthened her faith and reinforced her calling to serve God and others.
In 1535, Angela Merici gathered a group of young girl students and laid the foundation for what would later become the Institute of Saint Ursula. The primary objective of this institute was to provide education to children, starting with religious teachings and later expanding into secular subjects. Angela established her first schools in the Italian cities of Desenzano and Brescia.
Saint Angela Merici's legacy is marked by her dedication to education and the empowerment of women. Her vision and teachings played a significant role in shaping the Ursuline Sisters' charism and mission of promoting education, particularly for girls, in a time when such opportunities were limited.
Saint Angela Merici is often depicted with a cloak, symbolizing her role as a teacher and mentor. Another common representation shows a ladder, which represents the spiritual ascent and growth of her followers. This ladder is often portrayed with young women climbing it, signifying the individuals Angela inspired on their journey of faith and education.
Saint Angela Merici is the patron saint against sickness, illness, or bodily ailments. She is also invoked for protection against the death of parents and for those who are disabled, handicapped, or physically challenged. Additionally, she is recognized as the patron saint of the Pious Union of Sisters Devoted to Saint Angela Merici and the city of Brescia, Italy.
After her death on January 24, 1540, in Brescia, Italy, Angela Merici was interred in the church of Saint Afra in Brescia. Remarkably, her body remains incorrupt to this day, a testament to her profound holiness.
In recognition of her exceptional virtues and her impact on education and female spirituality, Saint Angela Merici was beatified on April 30, 1768, by Pope Clement XIII. Later, on May 24, 1807, she was canonized by Pope Pius VII, affirming her status as a revered saint in the Catholic Church.
