Biography

Saint Anastasius The Fuller, also known as Anastasius of Salona, Anastasius of Lavandaio, and Anastasio, was born into a wealthy Aquileian noble family. Despite his privileged upbringing, Anastasius took to heart Saint Paul's advice to the Thessalonians that it is best to work with one's hands. Inspired by this teaching, he decided to pursue a humble trade as a fuller in Spalato, Dalmatia (modern Split, Croatia). Anastasius lived during a time when Christians were undergoing severe persecutions under the reign of Emperor Diocletian. Nevertheless, he openly practiced his faith and fearlessly displayed his devotion. To publicly proclaim his Christianity, Anastasius courageously painted a cross on the door of his shop, inviting both admiration and suspicion. As the persecutions intensified, Anastasius remained steadfast in his faith and continued to practice his religious duties. His unwavering commitment to Christ eventually led to his martyrdom. Anastasius was apprehended by the authorities, who were determined to extinguish his faith and silence his witness. However, no threats or acts of intimidation could sway him from his religious beliefs. In 304, during the reign of Diocletian, Anastasius was sentenced to a cruel death. He was drowned with a weight tied around his neck in Salona, Dalmatia, a part of modern-day Croatia. Despite the tragic end to his earthly life, his body was recovered and brought back to Salona, where a church was constructed in his honor. The devotion towards Saint Anastasius The Fuller continued to grow, and his relics were eventually transferred to Spalato (modern Split, Croatia) during the 7th century. The faithful flocked to his tomb, seeking his intercession and celebrating his exemplary life. Saint Anastasius The Fuller is venerated as a Pre-Congregation saint, as his canonization occurred before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. His feast days, which are celebrated by the Catholic Church, fall on August 26th and, on some calendars, September 7th. Throughout history, Saint Anastasius The Fuller has been regarded as a patron saint for fullers and weavers. People in these trades often invoke his intercession for guidance, protection, and strength in their work. His life serves as an inspiration for all Christians to remain steadfast in their faith, no matter the circumstances or adversities they may face.
