Feast Day: January 2
Death: January 1, 2
Saint Alverius of Agaunum, also known as Saint Alverius of Thebes, was a soldier and member of the renowned Theban Legion. Born in an unknown year, he dedicated his life to serving the Roman Empire as a soldier during the reign of Emperor Maximian. During this time, Emperor Maximian initiated a violent persecution against Christians, resulting in the martyrdom of numerous faithful believers. Sensing the danger that awaited him and his fellow Christians, including his fellow soldiers, Alverius resolved to escape the persecution. In his bid to avoid persecution, Alverius deserted his unit and fled to the Piedmont region of Italy. However, his escape turned out to be short-lived as he was eventually apprehended by local authorities and charged with being a Christian. In those challenging times, practicing Christianity was considered illegal and punishable by death. After a swift trial, Alverius was condemned to martyrdom for his unwavering faith in Christ. The exact date of his execution remains uncertain, but it is believed to have taken place around the year 288 in Piedmont, Italy. Alverius embraced his fate with steadfastness and became a martyr, laying down his life for his Christian beliefs. Following his execution, Alverius was buried in a stone coffin in a church located in Fossano, Italy. The remains of this brave soldier-saint were venerated by the local community, and on 2nd January 1427, they were officially enshrined in their final resting place. Later, his relics were transferred to the cathedral of Narni, Italy, where they continue to be venerated by faithful Catholics. Although not much is known about Alverius' life before his time in the Theban Legion, his commitment to his faith and willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice has inspired many to follow in his footsteps. While he may not have been formally canonized by the church, he remains a revered figure of devotion and intercession. Though no specific patronage has been assigned to Saint Alverius of Agaunum, his bravery and martyrdom serve as an inspiration for soldiers, as well as all those who face persecution for their beliefs. His feast day is celebrated on the 2nd of January, providing an opportunity for the faithful to remember and honor the life of this courageous soldier-saint.
