Biography

Saint Altfried of Münster, also known as Altfrid or Altfrith, was a monk and priest who played a significant role in the development of the Church in Germany during the 9th century. He was born in the 9th century, possibly in Friesland, which is in modern-day Netherlands. Saint Altfried was the nephew of Saint Liudger, the first bishop of Münster, Germany. He was also related to Saint Gerfried of Münster, who followed his uncle as the second bishop. Following in their footsteps, Altfried dedicated his life to the service of the Church. After entering the monastic life, Altfried became the fifth abbot of the monastery of Werden, located in Germany. His tenure as abbot showcased his leadership skills and his commitment to the spiritual growth of the monks under his care. He provided guidance and support in their religious pursuits, nurturing their spiritual development. Later on, Saint Altfried was appointed as the abbot of the monastery of Helmstedt in Germany, where he continued to promote the monastic ideals of prayer, study, and community living.
