Feast Day: March 11
Death: March 11, 1866
Saint Alexius U Seyong, also known as Alejo U Se-yong, Alessio U Se-yong, Alleksio, and U Se-Yeong, was born in 1845 in Seoheung, Hwanghae-do, North Korea. He was born into a wealthy noble family in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. Despite his privileged background, Alexius found himself drawn to Christianity and developed a strong interest in the faith. During this period, he had the opportunity to meet with Saint Siméon-François Berneux, a French bishop, and missionary in Korea. Saint Marcus Chong Ui-Bae, a dedicated catechist, also took on the role of guiding Alexius in his journey of faith. With their guidance, Alexius' interest in Christianity grew steadily. However, facing a significant challenge, Alexius had to confront opposition from his family who strongly opposed his newfound faith. Undeterred, he made the courageous decision to leave home and work alongside missionaries. Alexius took on the task of translating catechism and other religious texts into the Korean language, contributing to the propagation of Christianity in Korea. Tragically, during one of the many persecutions that took place in Korea, all Christians in his village were arrested. Overwhelmed with the fear of persecution, Alexius, for a moment, succumbed to his fears and denied his faith. As a result, he was released by the authorities. Filled with deep remorse for his denial, Alexius immediately sought to make amends. He went to prison to confess his failure to his bishop, determined to face the consequences of his actions. Recognizing the importance of authentic repentance, Alexius returned to the prison where the other Christians were held, ready to bear witness to his faith in the face of persecution. Following his confession, Saint Alexius U Seyong was arrested once again, imprisoned alongside his fellow Christians, and subjected to severe torture. Despite the unimaginable pain he endured, he remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to renounce his belief in Christ. His unwavering commitment to Christianity led to his ultimate martyrdom. On March 11, 1866, Saint Alexius U Seyong was executed for his faith at the Small West Gate in Seoul, South Korea. His courageous martyrdom served as an inspiration to countless other Christians, who continued to face persecution during that challenging time. Saint Alexius U Seyong was venerated by Pope Paul VI on July 4, 1968, with a decree of martyrdom. He was beatified by Pope Paul VI on October 6, 1968. Finally, on May 6, 1984, he was canonized by Pope John Paul II, recognizing his extraordinary witness to the Christian faith even in the face of severe persecution. Although there is limited information concerning specific patronage, Saint Alexius U Seyong's life demonstrates great strength and conviction in the face of adversity. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining steadfast in one's faith, even during the most difficult circumstances. Saint Alexius U Seyong's feast days are celebrated on March 11 and September 20, along with the other Martyrs of Korea.
