Biography

Saint Alexander of Bergamo, also known as Alessandro da Bergamo, was an Imperial Roman centurion who is believed to have served in the Theban Legion. He is renowned for his unwavering faith, martyrdom, and his refusal to martyr other Christians. While many legends surround his life, it is important to note that some of these stories may be pious fiction rather than historical fact. Saint Alexander is often depicted holding a lily, which symbolizes purity and devotion. In addition, he is portrayed with a military standard featuring a white lily, indicating his connection with the Roman army. The palm of martyrdom is another common representation associated with him, signifying his ultimate sacrifice for his faith. Saint Alexander is also depicted as a Roman soldier or a soldier on horseback, reminding us of his role as a centurion. Born in the city of Bergamo in Italy, Saint Alexander is revered as a local patron saint. He is also venerated in other locations such as Capriate San Gervasio, Cervignano d'Adda, Comenduno, Albino, Grassobbio, and Mosciano Sant'Angelo.
