Biography

Saint Aldericus of Sens, also known as Aldric or Audri, was a renowned Catholic figure who lived during the 9th century. He was born in 790 in the Gatinais region of France. From an early age, Aldericus displayed a remarkable devotion to God and felt a calling to lead a life dedicated to serving others. At a young age, Aldericus joined the Benedictine monastery at Ferrières, France. Here, he immersed himself in the rigorous monastic life, embracing the core values of prayer, obedience, and humility. His commitment to his spiritual journey did not go unnoticed, and he quickly established a reputation for his profound wisdom and piety. Recognizing his exceptional qualities, Aldericus was ordained a priest, and his reputation continued to grow. As his influence expanded, he captured the attention of the Church hierarchy, and in 828, Aldericus was consecrated as the Archbishop of Sens, France. In this position, he dedicated himself to the spiritual and pastoral care of his flock, tirelessly working to promote the faith and provide guidance to those in need. As Archbishop, Aldericus became renowned for his virtue and the justice of his rulings. He diligently served both the clergy and laypeople, devoting his energies to maintaining order and harmony within the Church. Under his guidance, the diocese of Sens flourished, as he fostered a spirit of unity, discipline, and holiness among the faithful. While little is known about Saint Aldericus' physical appearance, his inner virtues and spiritual influence were far-reaching. Though representations of him are scarce, his memory lives on through the faithful who seek his intercession. Saint Aldericus of Sens passed away peacefully in 841, succumbing to natural causes. Unfortunately, many of his relics were destroyed during the religious conflicts of the time, particularly by the Huguenots in 1569. However, his memory remains cherished both in Sens, France, and among the Catholic faithful who recognize him as a model of pastoral leadership and holiness. Saint Aldericus of Sens was proclaimed a saint in heaven by the People of God, but before the establishment of formal canonization processes. Therefore, he is considered a pre-congregation saint, recognized for his exemplary Christian life, devotion to God, and significant contribution to the Church. Today, Saint Aldericus of Sens is venerated as the patron saint of Sens, France. His feast day is celebrated on October 10th, an occasion for the faithful to honor his memory and seek his intercession.
