Biography

Saint Aldemar The Wise, also known as Aldemar of Monte Cassino, was born in 985 in Capua, Italy. From our understanding of historical documents, he was a monk at the renowned Monte Cassino Abbey, which was founded by Saint Benedict. Aldemar's dedication to his monastic life and his deep spiritual insight soon gained him recognition as a wise and holy individual.

Aldemar's reputation as a miracle worker began to spread when he became the spiritual director of a convent in Capua. This convent had been founded by Princess Aloara, who greatly valued Aldemar's guidance and wanted him to remain with them. However, a dispute erupted between the princess and Aldemar's abbot at Monte Cassino, who insisted that he return to the abbey. Faced with this conflict, Aldemar chose a path of peace and sought refuge in Boiana, Italy.

Unfortunately, the dispute between the princess and the abbot took a dangerous turn when someone involved in the argument attempted to take Aldemar's life. Realizing his life was in jeopardy, he was compelled to leave Boiana. Subsequently, Saint Aldemar found solace and founded a monastery in Bocchignano, Italy, which served as the motherhouse for several monastic institutions in the area.

Throughout his life, Saint Aldemar remained committed to his calling as a monk, tirelessly working for the spiritual growth of both himself and those around him. He dedicated himself to prayer and contemplation, delving into the depths of divine wisdom. Many sought his counsel, inspired by his profound insight and his ability to guide others along their spiritual journeys.

Saint Aldemar's wisdom and holiness continued to attract pilgrims from near and far, seeking his intercession and witnessing the miracles attributed to him. His reputation reached the ears of many faithful, and both the common people and nobles came to revere him as a saintly figure.

Aldemar lived a long and fruitful life, passing away in Bucchianico, Italy, around the year 1080, from natural causes. He was buried in the Church of Saint Urban in Bucchianico, where his relics were venerated by the faithful. However, during the invasion of French troops in 1799, his tomb was desecrated, and his relics were scattered. Thankfully, they were eventually recovered and placed in an altar dedicated to him in the same church, where they continue to be venerated to this day.

Saint Aldemar The Wise is celebrated as a holy man and miracle worker, known for his unwavering dedication to God and his profound spiritual insight. His feast day is recognized on the 24th of March, and in some calendars, it is also celebrated on the 6th of October. His life and teachings stand as an inspiration to all who seek wisdom and strive for a deeper union with the Divine.
