Biography

Saint Albert of Como, also known as Aribert, Ariberto, Adalbert, or Adelbert, was a revered figure in the Catholic Church known for his devoutness and service to God. Born in the late 11th century, not much is known about his early life or family background. At a young age, Albert was drawn to a life of solitude and contemplation. He sought spiritual guidance and eventually became a hermit at Rho, a small town in Italy. In isolation, he spent his days in deep prayer and meditation, seeking a closer connection with God. His ascetic lifestyle and unwavering devotion soon earned him a reputation for holiness, attracting followers and disciples who sought his wisdom and guidance. In time, Albert's reputation reached the ears of the Benedictine monks at San Carpofero monastery in Como, Italy. Impressed by his piety, they invited him to become a member of their community. Albert willingly accepted the invitation and joined the monastery, where he continued to live a life of austerity, exemplifying the monastic virtues of obedience, humility, and self-denial. Albert's deep spirituality and commitment to his religious duties did not go unnoticed by his fellow monks. He was soon appointed as the abbot of San Carpofero monastery, entrusted with the responsibility of guiding his brothers in their quest for spiritual growth. Under his leadership, the monastery thrived, and his fellow monks were inspired by his dedication and adherence to the Rule of Saint Benedict. However, the Church recognized Albert's exceptional qualities and requested him to serve a higher purpose. He was appointed as the bishop of Como, a position he reluctantly accepted, knowing that it would require him to leave the abbotship and assume the responsibilities of shepherding the faithful in the diocese. As the bishop of Como, Albert dedicated himself to the spiritual and pastoral care of his diocese. He advocated for justice, diligently worked to eradicate abuses, and fostered a sense of unity among the clergy and laity. Known for his humility and compassion, he was beloved by the people he served, and many sought his counsel and intercession. Throughout his life, Saint Albert of Como embodied the virtues of faith, love, and charity. He was renowned for his constant prayer, acts of self-mortification, and unwavering commitment to God's will. His simplicity of life and purity of heart enabled him to inspire others to embrace a deeper relationship with Christ. Saint Albert died around 1092, peacefully, of natural causes, leaving a lasting legacy of holiness and devotion behind him. His feast day is celebrated on June 3rd, a day dedicated to honoring his life and commemorating his remarkable contributions to the Church.
