Feast Day: September 5
Saint Albert of Butrio, also known as Alberto di Butrio, was born into a regionally important family in the year 1030. Little is known about his early life, but at some point, he felt called to embrace a life of solitude and became a hermit in the small village of Butrio, near the Borrione River Valley in the diocese of Tortona, Italy. Legend has it that during his time as a hermit, a remarkable event occurred that greatly impacted his life. The son of the Marquis of Casaco, who was born mute, was miraculously cured when Albert prayed for him. As a gesture of gratitude, the Marquis built a beautiful Romanesque church in Butrio where Albert and his fellow hermits could gather for the Divine Office. Inspired by this act of generosity, Albert decided to dedicate his life to the service of God in a more organized manner. He joined the Benedictine Order, and the church that the Marquis had built became the foundation of the Benedictine Cluniac monastery that Albert established in Butrio. He would serve as the first abbot of this monastery for the rest of his life. As the abbot of the Butrio monastery, Saint Albert of Butrio was renowned for his wisdom, leadership, and piety. Under his guidance, the monastery flourished and became a haven for monks seeking a life of prayer, contemplation, and study. Saint Albert prioritized the spiritual formation of his fellow monks and promoted discipline, humility, and devotion to God. Saint Albert's reputation as a wise and holy man spread far beyond the walls of the monastery. People from far and wide sought his counsel and sought his intercession in their prayers. He became known as a spiritual advisor and confessor to many, always offering guidance and support to those in need. In addition to his role as abbot and spiritual advisor, Saint Albert was also deeply involved in the local community. He was known for his acts of charity, particularly towards the poor and the marginalized. He advocated for justice and held a special concern for the plight of the oppressed and the suffering. Saint Albert of Butrio lived a long and fruitful life, dedicated to the service of God and the well-being of others. He died on September 5, 1073, in Tortona, Liguria, Italy, of natural causes. His memory and legacy continue to inspire and guide countless individuals in their own spiritual journeys. While Saint Albert of Butrio's representation is unknown, his life and example serve as a reminder of the transformative power of faith, prayer, and selfless service. Although no specific patronage is associated with him, Saint Albert's life of holiness and devotion continues to inspire people in their pursuit of a deeper relationship with God and a commitment to love and serve others.
