Biography

Saint Agileus of Carthage, also known as Agileo, Agilaeus, or Agleus, was a martyr who lived during the early Christian period in North Africa. While there is limited information available about his life, his martyrdom and veneration have been recorded. Saint Agileus was born in Africa, likely in Carthage, in an era when Christians faced intense persecution. He lived in a time when the Roman Empire was known for its animosity towards Christians and the practice of Christianity was considered illegal. Despite the dangers, Saint Agileus chose to openly profess his faith. Although specifics of his life and background remain unclear, what we do know is that Saint Augustine, one of the most renowned Church Fathers and theologians, preached a sermon in his honor. This suggests that Saint Agileus' story was known and revered even during Augustine's time. It is believed that Saint Agileus faced persecution and martyrdom in Carthage, the capital city of the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, which is present-day Tunisia. Although the exact circumstances surrounding his martyrdom are unknown, it is likely that he met a violent death for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. Following his martyrdom, Saint Agileus' relics were eventually translated to Rome, Italy. Translation of relics was a common practice during the early Christian period, with the remains of saints being moved to different locations for veneration and to inspire faith among the faithful. The fact that his relics were brought to Rome suggests that his memory was greatly honored and venerated. Despite his pre-congregation status, meaning he was recognized as a saint before the official canonization process was established, Saint Agileus continues to be remembered and celebrated by the Catholic Church. His feast day is observed on January 25th each year.
