Biography

Saint Aemilian of Trebi, also known as Aemilian of Trevi, Emiliano, or Miliano, was a fourth-century bishop of Trebi, Italy. He lived during a time of intense Christian persecution under the Roman emperor Diocletian. Although information about his early life is scarce, it is believed that Aemilian was born in Armenia. Aemilian was known for his unwavering faith and commitment to spreading the teachings of Christianity. As the bishop of Trebi, he diligently served his community, providing spiritual guidance and support to the faithful. However, this period was marked by severe persecution against Christians, and Aemilian was not exempt from this brutality. In 304, during the height of the Diocletian persecutions, Aemilian was arrested for his Christian beliefs. He was subjected to various forms of torture in an attempt to force him to renounce his faith. Despite the physical pain and suffering inflicted upon him, Aemilian remained steadfast and resolute in his devotion to God. The final moments of Aemilian's life are notable for their profound faith and courage. On January 28, 304, he was taken to a location about two miles outside Trevi, Italy, where he was tied to an olive tree and beheaded. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ, even in the face of brutal persecution. Following his death, the memory of Saint Aemilian remained alive among the faithful. However, it was not until 1660 that his relics were rediscovered during construction work on the cathedral of Spoleto, Italy. This discovery served to revive the veneration of Saint Aemilian. Although Saint Aemilian was never formally canonized in the sense of a Congregation-approved canonization process, his cult and veneration had existed since ancient times. Therefore, he is considered a saint of the Pre-Congregation era. Today, Saint Aemilian is honored as the patron saint of Trevi, Italy. His feast day is celebrated on January 28th, the day of his martyrdom. Through his intercession, the faithful seek his guidance and protection, especially in times of persecution, adversity, and the defense of the Christian faith.
