Biography

Saint Aedh Mac Bricc, also known as Aedh mac Breece, Aed, Aod, and Aedsind, was born in Meath, Ireland. He was the son of Breece, belonging to the Hy Neill clan. Aedh spent his early years working on his father's farm, learning the ways of agriculture and life in rural Ireland. Tragedy struck when Aedh's father passed away, leaving behind an inheritance. However, his brother, for reasons unknown, refused to grant Aedh his rightful share of the inheritance. In desperation, Aedh devised a plan to kidnap a girl from his brother's household, hoping to use her as leverage to resolve the issue. However, before carrying out his plan, he encountered Illathan, the bishop of Rathlihen in Offay. Bishop Illathan, recognizing the darkness in Aedh's planned actions, counseled him against it. Impressed by the wisdom and guidance of the bishop, Aedh decided to change his life's path. He chose to stay with Illathan and devote himself to studying the teachings of Christianity and embracing a life of piety. Under the bishop's tutelage, Aedh experienced a transformation in his spiritual journey. He became deeply committed to serving God and helping others. In time, Aedh founded a monastery at Cill-áir in Westmeath. This monastic community became a center of Christian learning and a place of solace for many seeking spiritual guidance. Saint Aedh Mac Bricc became widely known for his dedication to spreading the Christian faith throughout Meath. He embarked on numerous missionary activities, founding churches in various locations across the region. Aedh's efforts contributed significantly to the growth of Christianity in Ireland during that era. One particular incident that attributed to Aedh's reputation for miraculous intervention involved Saint Brigid of Ireland. Brigid, a revered figure in Irish Christianity, suffered from a severe headache. Through an act of divine intervention, Aedh is said to have miraculously cured her of this ailment. This event further solidified his reputation as a saint capable of interceding in cases of headaches. Saint Aedh Mac Bricc peacefully passed away in 589 due to natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of piety, service, and devotion. Although the specific details of his canonization are not documented, he is recognized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church's Pre-Congregation era. Today, Saint Aedh Mac Bricc is revered as the patron saint against headaches. Many believers continue to seek his intercession when suffering from this affliction. His feast day is commemorated on the 10th of November, offering an opportunity for the faithful to honor his memory and seek his guidance in their spiritual journeys.
