Feast Day: January 16
Death: January 16, 1220
Saint Adjute of Morocco, also known as Adiuto or Adjutus, was a Franciscan Friar Minor who, along with his fellow missionaries, dedicated his life to evangelizing the Moors of the West. Born in an unknown date and place, Saint Adjute became a fervent follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and joined the Franciscan order to spread the teachings of Christianity. Throughout his life, Saint Adjute traveled far and wide, preaching and spreading the message of the Gospel. He and his fellow friars embarked on numerous missions, starting in Italy and spreading to Aragon, Coimbra, Seville, and eventually reaching the distant land of Morocco. Their mission in Morocco proved to be both challenging and dangerous, as the Moors were not receptive to their message. In Morocco, Saint Adjute and his companions faced persecution and hostility. They were eventually banished from the country due to their relentless efforts to spread Christianity. Undeterred by the hardships they faced, they returned to Morocco, determined to continue their mission despite the risks. Sadly, Saint Adjute and his companions met a tragic fate upon their return to Morocco. On January 16, 1220, Saint Adjute was martyred for his faith. He endured unimaginable suffering, being scourged until his ribs appeared bare. To add to his pain, burning oil and vinegar were poured into his wounds, and he was ruthlessly rolled on sharp stones and potsherds. Finally, his martyrdom was completed with a sword that split his head. The relics of Saint Adjute were miraculously saved from oblivion and are now enshrined in the monastery of the Holy Cross in Coimbra, Portugal. Their preservation serves as a testament to the reverence and devotion that exists for this holy saint. Saint Adjute was officially canonized by Pope Sixtus IV in 1481, recognizing his martyrdom and unwavering dedication to the Christian faith. While Saint Adjute does not have a specified patronage, his courageous actions and ultimate sacrifice continue to inspire faithful individuals seeking to live a life of steadfast devotion to the Gospel. Saint Adjute of Morocco, also known as Adiuto or Adjutus, remains a shining example of the profound commitment and unwavering faith that characterized the early Franciscan missionaries. His life, marked by sacrifice and martyrdom, serves as a reminder of the trials and tribulations endured by those who dedicated themselves to spreading the message of Christ.
