Feast Day: June 25
Saint Adalbert of Egmond, also known as Adalbert Levita, Adalbert Diaconus, Adalberto, Adelbert, Aedelbert, Aedelbertus, and Albert, was a member of the Northumbrian royal family. Born in Northumbria, England, he grew up in a devout Christian environment and was drawn to a life of religious service from an early age. Adalbert became a spiritual student of and fellow evangelist in Ireland with Saint Egbert of Rathemigisi. He studied under Egbert and learned the ways of preaching and evangelization. Adalbert showed great dedication and zeal in spreading the teachings of Christianity, particularly in the region of Friesland. In 690, Adalbert joined Saint Willibrord on a mission to evangelize the pagans of Friesland. Their efforts were met with resistance, but through their perseverance, they managed to convert many people to Christianity. Adalbert's preaching and exemplary life served as a powerful testimony and attracted numerous followers. His sincere devotion and ability to connect with people played a significant role in the successful conversion of the people of Egmond. There are conflicting records regarding Adalbert's leadership position at the Abbey of Epternach, as some suggest he may have served as abbot. However, the lack of clear historical evidence makes it difficult to ascertain the specifics of his role. Nevertheless, Adalbert's contribution to the growth and development of the Christian community in the region was widely recognized. After his time in Friesland, Adalbert returned to the diocese of Utrecht, Netherlands, where he became the archdeacon. In this position, he continued to tirelessly serve the people, offering them guidance and support in their spiritual journey. Saint Adalbert passed away around 740, dying of natural causes. Following his death, miracles were reported at his tomb, turning it into a place of pilgrimage. A fountain was said to have sprung up on the opening of his tomb, symbolizing the spiritual life and renewal that he brought to the people through his preaching and example. Adalbert of Egmond was canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church. While he does not have a specific patronage assigned to him, his powerful witness of faith and dedication to the spread of Christianity make him a model for all believers. His feast day is celebrated on June 25th. Saint Adalbert's life serves as an inspiration for all those seeking to live a life committed to evangelization, preaching, and the service of others. His passion for sharing the Gospel and his unwavering faith have left an indelible mark on the history of Christianity.
