Biography

Saint Acacius Agathangelos of Melitene, also known as Acacius, Acacius of Hither, Achates, Achatius, and The Good Angel, was a prominent figure in early Christianity as the Bishop of Hither, an ancient city located in Asia, which is Melitene in Armenia but now known as Malatya in Turkey. Born in the 3rd century, Saint Acacius Agathangelos became widely recognized for his efforts in defending orthodox Christianity against the heresy of Nestorianism. Nestorianism was a controversial belief system that undermined the unity of the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ. During the Council of Ephesus, which took place in 431 AD, Saint Acacius passionately engaged in theological debates, asserting the orthodox perspective and arguing against the teachings of Nestorius, the leading proponent of the heresy. Saint Acacius' unwavering commitment to preserving the purity of Christian doctrine eventually led to his imprisonment during the reign of Emperor Decius. At that time, widespread persecution against Christians occurred, with the aim of eradicating the faith. Despite the dangers he faced, Saint Acacius fearlessly maintained his Christian faith and refused to renounce it or offer sacrifices to idols. As a result, Saint Acacius was brought before the imperial tribunal to be tried for his crimes of practicing Christianity and rejecting the state religion. Strikingly, instead of succumbing to fear or despair, the saint seized the opportunity to make an eloquent defense of his faith. His defense was so articulate and impassioned that it left a profound impression on the judges, who were initially poised to condemn him. Remarkably, the judges were so moved by Saint Acacius' testimony that they made the unprecedented decision to release him, realizing the sincerity and truthfulness of his words. Although Saint Acacius survived the persecutions of Decius, he is often counted among the martyrs due to his willingness to endure suffering and possibly face martyrdom for his faith. Saint Acacius Agathangelos' life is not extensively documented, but his martyr-like dedication to Christianity and his defense of orthodox beliefs left an indelible mark on the early Church. While the details of his life and ministry remain relatively obscure, his profound impact on the Council of Ephesus and his courageous stand for the true Christian faith have solidified his reputation as a venerable saint. Saint Acacius Agathangelos of Melitene is venerated and honored in the Catholic Church, particularly by those who uphold the importance of defending orthodox doctrine against heresy. His feast day in the Catholic calendar is celebrated on April 17th. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, his feast day is observed on March 31st. While Saint Acacius is not widely recognized as a patron saint of any specific cause or occupation, his exemplary faith, steadfastness, and commitment to orthodoxy continue to inspire Christians around the world.
