Feast Day: April 2
Saint Abundius of Como, also known as Abbondio, Abondius, Abundias, or Abundus, was a prominent figure in the Catholic Church during the 5th century. He was born in Thessalonica, Greece, and later became a priest and eventually the Bishop of Como, Italy. Saint Abundius was not only recognized for his leadership within his diocese, but he also gained recognition as a noted theologian and scholar. His theological expertise was acknowledged when he was chosen to attend the Council of Constantinople in 450. During this council, he played a vital role in shaping the doctrine of the Church. Continuing his service to the Church, Abundius was appointed as a diplomat from Pope Leo the Great to Emperor Theodosius II. This diplomatic mission showcased his diplomacy and negotiation skills, as he represented the Pope to the Emperor. In 451, Saint Abundius served as the Papal legate to the Council of Chalcedon. This council, held in present-day Istanbul, Turkey, aimed to address the heresies of Eutychianism and Nestorianism. Abundius fervently fought against these heresies, particularly Eutychianism, which denied the human nature of Jesus. His active participation in this council contributed significantly to the Church's efforts to combat these heresies and strengthen its teachings on the nature of Christ. Saint Abundius also attended the Council of Milan in 452, further demonstrating his commitment to the unity and orthodoxy of the Church. Throughout his life, he consistently defended the faith and upheld the teachings of the Church against various heresies that threatened its unity. One particular event associated with Saint Abundius is his miraculous act of raising a rich pagan's son to life. This notable miracle stands as a testament to his powerful intercession and connection to divine grace. Although there are claims that Saint Abundius authored the Te Deum, a renowned hymn of praise, the actual authorship remains uncertain and disputed among scholars. Saint Abundius of Como died in 469 of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith and dedication to the Catholic Church. His impact on the Church and his defense against heresies earned him the title of a saint. Saint Abundius is venerated as the patron saint of Como, Italy. This is in recognition of his devoted service as the Bishop of Como and his influence in the growth of the diocese. Moreover, he is regarded as a spiritual protector of the city and its inhabitants. His feast day is celebrated on April 2nd each year, commemorating his life and contributions to the Church. Although Saint Abundius was canonized before the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, his sanctity and exemplary life have been recognized by the Church since ancient times.
