Feast Day: April 21
Saint Abdelcalas, also known as Abdelchalas, Abdecalas, and Abdelas, was an elderly priest who was martyred alongside approximately 100 other believers during the persecutions of King Sapor II. His story is one of faith, courage, and ultimate sacrifice. Born in ancient Persia, not much is known about Abdelcalas's early life. However, his calling to the priesthood and his devotion to the Catholic faith became evident as he grew older. He dedicated his life to serving God and spreading the teachings of Jesus Christ to the people of his community. During the reign of King Sapor II, Christians faced severe persecution and were forced to renounce their faith or suffer the consequences. Though elderly and vulnerable, Abdelcalas remained steadfast in his beliefs, refusing to denounce Christ. He was determined to be an example of unwavering faith, even in the face of imminent danger. In Good Friday of the year 345, Abdelcalas, along with around 100 other faithful Christians, was captured by King Sapor II's forces. They were subjected to intense interrogations and cruel tortures, aimed at breaking their spirit and making them renounce their faith. However, Abdelcalas and his fellow believers remained resolute, choosing to endure the pain rather than renounce their Lord. Finally, on Good Friday, a day that holds significant meaning for Christians worldwide, Abdelcalas and his companions were brutally put to death, becoming martyrs for their unwavering commitment to their beliefs. Their martyrdom symbolized their willingness to give their lives for their faith, echoing the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Although Saint Abdelcalas did not leave behind a specific representation in art or iconography, his memory lives on in the hearts and minds of those who admire his unwavering faith and determination. His feast day is celebrated on April 21st each year, a day of remembrance for his sacrifice. While Saint Abdelcalas has not been officially declared a patron saint of any specific cause or group, his story serves as an inspiration for those facing persecution for their faith. His courage and resilience continue to inspire believers worldwide, reminding them of the importance of staying faithful, even in the face of extreme adversity. Though Abdelcalas was canonized before the establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, his recognition as a saint predates the modern formal process of canonization. Nevertheless, his story serves as a testament to the enduring impact of martyrdom and the transformative power of faith. Saint Abdelcalas stands as a shining example of unwavering dedication to one's beliefs, even in the harshest of circumstances.
