Biography

Saint Ðaminh Huyen, also known as Dominic, was a faithful Catholic layman who lived during a time of great persecution in Vietnam. He was born in an unknown year in the apostolic vicariate of Central Tonkin, which is now part of modern Vietnam. Saint Ðaminh Huyen was a fisherman by trade and a devoted husband and father. He led a simple life, working hard to provide for his family. However, his life took a tragic turn when the emperor Tu Duc instigated a severe persecution against Catholics in Vietnam. During this time, Saint Ðaminh Huyen remained steadfast in his faith. He refused to renounce his beliefs and continued to practice his religion despite the risk to his life. His unwavering commitment to God and the Church earned him the admiration of his fellow prisoners while he was incarcerated. Despite enduring imprisonment, torture, and the constant threat of death, Saint Ðaminh Huyen remained resolute in his faith. He saw his time in prison as an opportunity to minister to his fellow prisoners, encouraging them to stay strong and persevere in their beliefs. On June 5, 1862, in Nam Ðinh, Vietnam, Saint Ðaminh Huyen was burned alive, becoming a martyr for his faith. His courageous witness to the Gospel and his unwavering dedication to his fellow prisoners made a lasting impact on all who witnessed his martyrdom. In recognition of his heroic virtue and martyrdom, Saint Ðaminh Huyen was venerated by Pope Pius XII on February 11, 1951. He was officially beatified by the same Pope on April 29, 1951, and later canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II on June 19, 1988. Although there is no specific patronage associated with Saint Ðaminh Huyen, he serves as a model of faith, courage, and perseverance for all Catholics. His life and martyrdom remind us of the importance of remaining steadfast in our beliefs and trusting in God's grace even in the face of persecution. As we celebrate his feast days on June 5 and November 24, we are inspired to imitate his unwavering commitment to Christ.
