The Martyrs of Tarragona, also known as the Blessed Cesáreo España Ortiz, Blessed Isidre Fábregas Gils, Blessed Javier Pradas Vidal, Blessed Josep Camprubí Corrubí, Blessed Modest Godo Buscato, Blessed Modest Pamplona Falguera, and Blessed Nicolás Rueda Barriocanal, were a group of seven individuals who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. These individuals were devoted members of the Christian Brothers and a parish priest who faithfully served their communities in Tarragona, Spain. Their lives were marked by their unwavering dedication to their faith and their commitment to their respective callings. Blessed Cesáreo España Ortiz was an inspirational figure who lived a life of exceptional virtue and piety. His deep love for God and others defined his character, and he tirelessly worked to spread the message of Christ's love through his teachings. Blessed Isidre Fábregas Gils was known for his compassionate nature and his willingness to serve those around him. Blessed Modest Pamplona Falguera was a man of deep prayer and contemplation. He devoted himself to a life of silence and solitude, seeking to deepen his relationship with God and offer intercession for the needs of the world. Blessed Nicolás Rueda Barriocanal was a man of strong conviction and unwavering faith. He fearlessly proclaimed the Gospel and openly opposed the violence and injustice of the Spanish Civil War. His commitment to truth and justice ultimately led to his martyrdom. On August 28, 1936, these seven individuals were brutally martyred in Tarragona, Spain, for their unwavering commitment to their faith. They were courageous witnesses of the Gospel, embodying the teachings of Christ and standing firmly for truth and justice amidst a time of intense persecution. In recognition of their heroic lives and martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI declared their martyrdom on June 28, 2012. Their beatification followed on October 13, 2013, by Pope Francis, with the beatification ceremony taking place in Tarragona, Spain. While these martyrs may not have been officially designated as patrons for specific causes, their lives and sacrifice serve as an inspiration for all believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of great adversity.
