Biography

The Martyrs of Suances, also known as the Patronato di San Giuseppe or the Patronage of Saint Joseph, were a group of five individuals who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. This group consisted of a priest, Donato Rodríguez García, and four laymen: Emilio Huidobro Corrales, Germán García y García, Valentín Palencia Marquina, and Zacarías Cuesta Campo. These individuals were dedicated Catholics who lived in the archdiocese of Burgos, Spain. During the Spanish Civil War that took place between 1936 and 1939, the country experienced a period of great turmoil and religious persecution. In the face of this hostility towards the Catholic Church, Donato Rodríguez García and his companions remained steadfast in their faith and remained dedicated to their calling. The exact circumstances of their martyrdom are not widely documented, but it is known that they died on 15th January 1937 near Suances, Cantabria, Spain. The location of their martyrdom indicates that they were likely victims of the violence that erupted during the civil war, a time marked by widespread persecution of Catholic clergy and devout believers. Their courageous witness to the Catholic faith and their willingness to die for their beliefs eventually led to their recognition as martyrs by the Catholic Church. On 30th September 2015, Pope Francis issued a decree of heroic virtues, officially recognizing the sanctity and holiness of Donato Rodríguez García and his companions. On 23rd April 2016, Pope Francis further honored the Martyrs of Suances by beatifying them during a special ceremony held in Burgos, Spain. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and served as a formal recognition of their martyrdom and their status as intercessors before God. As of now, no specific patronages have been assigned to the Martyrs of Suances. However, they are often venerated and invoked as a group, particularly in matters related to faith, courage, and martyrdom. The Martyrs of Suances, through their steadfast faith and ultimate sacrifice, serve as a powerful reminder of the dedication and courage exhibited by many Catholics during times of religious persecution. Their example continues to inspire and encourage believers today, providing a reminder of the strength that comes from remaining true to one's beliefs even in the face of adversity.
