Biography

The Martyrs of Pozo de Cantavieja, also known as the Eleven Spanish priests, were a group of Catholic priests who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. Their names were Emilio Antequera Lupiáñez, Joaquín Gisbert Aguilera, José Álvarez-Benavides de La Torre, José Cano García, José Román García González, Juan Capel Segura, Juan Ibáñez Martín, Luis Eduardo López Gascón, Manuel Martínez Giménez, Pío Navarro Moreno, and Ramiro Argüelles Hevia. The Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, was a conflict between Republicans, who supported the democratic government, and Nationalists, who were led by General Francisco Franco and sought to establish a military dictatorship. The Catholic Church was perceived as aligned with the Nationalists, and as a result, many priests and religious individuals faced persecution and violence. On September 13, 1936, in the town of Pozo de Cantavieja, Tahal, Almeria, Spain, these eleven priests were brutally murdered for their faith. Motivated by their commitment to their flock and their refusal to renounce their religious beliefs, they chose martyrdom. Their deaths served as a testament to their unwavering devotion to God and the Church, even in the face of intense persecution. These priests, like many other martyrs, were recognized by the Catholic Church for their sacrifice and faithfulness. On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, recognizing their heroic virtue and sanctity. This act of beatification is a significant step towards their eventual canonization as saints. The Martyrs of Pozo de Cantavieja are venerated for their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to their faith. Their intercession is sought by those who face persecution and those who strive to live out their faith in challenging circumstances. As their cause for canonization progresses, they continue to inspire and serve as an example of steadfastness and fidelity to Catholic teachings.
