Biography

The Martyrs of Northwest Africa, also known as the Martyrs of Aquae Regiae, Martyrs of Arbal, or Martyrs of Regiis, constitute a large group of Christians who were gruesomely murdered while they were gathered to celebrate Easter Mass. This tragic event took place during the persecutions orchestrated by King Genseric, who adhered to the Arian heresy and ruled over the Vandals. The Vandals, an East Germanic tribe, invaded and settled in the Roman province of Africa, which now encompasses modern-day Tunisia and parts of Algeria, Libya, and Morocco. King Genseric was known for his fierce opposition to the Catholic Church and his unwavering commitment to the Arian faith. Arianism was a theological doctrine that deviated from the orthodox teachings of the Catholic Church, particularly in relation to the nature of Christ. Consequently, Genseric actively sought to suppress the influence of Catholicism throughout his kingdom. It was during the year 459 that a large group of faithful Christians, whose exact numbers remain unknown, gathered in the town of Arbal, located in present-day Algeria, for their Easter Mass. In a brazen act of brutality, Genseric's soldiers surrounded the church where the believers were worshiping and launched a horrific attack. With no mercy, these Christians were mercilessly slaughtered, their lives taken in a display of religious persecution. Although the representation or symbolism associated with the Martyrs of Northwest Africa is not specified, their story speaks volumes about their unwavering faith, commitment, and sacrifice in the face of brutal persecution. As these martyrs died during the pre-congregation era of the Catholic Church, their canonization occurred prior to the formal establishment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the subsequent canonization process.
