Biography

The Martyrs of Málaga, also known as the Martyrs of the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, were a group of eight individuals who dedicated their lives to serving others as members of the Hospitallers of Saint John of God. They were all priests and brothers and were tragically martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. The names of the Martyrs of Málaga are Antonio del Charco Horques, Eusebio Ballesteros Rodríguez, Florentino Alonso Antonio, Isidro Valentín Peña Ojea, Juan Antonio García Moreno, Manuel Sanz y Sanz, Pedro Pastor García, and Silvestre Perez Laguna. Although not much information is available about their individual lives and backgrounds, what is known is that they all shared a deep commitment to their faith and serving those in need. These brave individuals were united in their religious vocation in the Hospitallers of Saint John of God, a Roman Catholic religious congregation founded by Saint John of God in the 16th century. This congregation is devoted to caring for the sick, especially those suffering from mental disorders. A central aspect of their charism is the hospitality and compassion shown towards those they serve. Tragically, their lives were cut short on 17th August 1936 when they were martyred in Málaga, Spain during the tumultuous Spanish Civil War. The Spanish Civil War was a period of intense political and social turmoil in Spain, marked by ideological conflicts and violence. The Martyrs of Málaga were targeted due to their religious affiliation and their dedication to the Christian faith. Their deaths were marked by their steadfast commitment to their faith and their refusal to renounce their religious beliefs. Despite facing persecution and the threat of violence, they remained faithful until the end, providing an inspiring example of courage and devotion. For their unwavering faith and martyrdom, the Martyrs of Málaga were officially recognized and venerated by the Catholic Church. On 5th July 2013, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging their sacrifice and virtues. Subsequently, on 13th October 2013, Pope Francis beatified them, bestowing upon them the title of Blessed Martyrs of Málaga. As of now, they do not have a specific patronage assigned to them. However, their feast day is celebrated on 17th August, commemorating the day of their martyrdom and offering a time for reflection on their lives and sacrifice. The Martyrs of Málaga serve as a reminder of the immense courage and devotion exhibited by those who have laid down their lives in service to their faith. They are an inspiration to all Catholics and individuals of faith as they exemplify unwavering dedication to their vocation and an unyielding commitment to Christian virtues.
