Feast Day: August 12
Death: August 12, 1936
The Martyrs of La Torre de Fontaubella, also known as Antoni Nogués Martí, Joan Rofes Sancho, Josep Maria Sancho Toda, and Ramon Martí Amenós, were four parish priests who were brutally murdered together during the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War. Antoni Nogués Martí was born in Catalonia, Spain, on March 4, 1889. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and was ordained as a priest in 1913. Antoni served as the parish priest in La Torre de Fontaubella, a small village in the Tarragona province of Spain. He was known for his deep spirituality, compassion for others, and dedication to his flock. Joan Rofes Sancho was born on August 15, 1866, in the same region as Antoni. He was ordained as a priest in 1890 and served as the parish priest in the nearby town of Tivissa. Joan was widely respected for his humility, kindness, and commitment to serving the needs of his community. Josep Maria Sancho Toda was born on February 1, 1896, in Spain. After his ordination in 1922, he was appointed as the parish priest in Vilaplana, a village close to La Torre de Fontaubella. Josep Maria was known for his strong faith, eloquent preaching, and his efforts to uplift the spiritual lives of his parishioners. Ramon Martí Amenós was born on June 10, 1902, in Catalonia, Spain. He was ordained as a priest in 1926 and served as the parish priest in Tivissa. Ramon was admired for his dedication to the sacraments, his commitment to promoting social justice, and his unwavering faith. During the Spanish Civil War, which took place from 1936 to 1939, the country was deeply divided politically, religiously, and socially. The Republicans, who opposed the reigning monarchy and were associated with leftist ideologies, targeted Catholic clergy and religious individuals for persecution. In July 1936, amid the violent outbreak of the war, the four priests were arrested and imprisoned. On the fateful day of August 12, 1936, the Martyrs of La Torre de Fontaubella were taken from their cells and executed by firing squad in La Torre de Fontaubella. They remained courageous to the end, forgiving their executioners and embracing death with faith and serenity. The martyrdom of Antoni Nogués Martí, Joan Rofes Sancho, Josep Maria Sancho Toda, and Ramon Martí Amenós is a testament to their unwavering commitment to their Catholic faith and their dedication to serving their communities. Pope Benedict XVI recognized their martyrdom on June 28, 2012, issuing a decree of martyrdom. Their beatification took place on October 13, 2013, under the pontificate of Pope Francis, with a special ceremony held in Tarragona, Spain. Although the Martyrs of La Torre de Fontaubella do not have specific patronages attributed to them, they are revered as models of faith, courage, and self-sacrifice. Their lives and deaths serve as an inspiration for Catholics, reminding them of the importance of remaining steadfast in the face of persecution and standing up for their beliefs.
