Feast Day: August 18
Death: August 18, 1936
The Martyrs of La Tejera, also known as the Blessed Abilio Sáiz López, Blessed Celestino José Alonso Villar, Blessed Gregorio Díez Pérez, and Blessed Santiago Franco Mayo, were four Dominican priests and a friar who suffered martyrdom together during the Spanish Civil War. Not much is known about the early lives and backgrounds of the Martyrs of La Tejera, but what is clear is their dedication to their faith and their willingness to sacrifice their lives for it. These four Dominicans lived and ministered in a time of great political and social upheaval in Spain, where tensions between factions were high. The Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, a conflict marked by violent clashes between Republicans and Nationalists. The Republicans, in their anti-Catholic sentiments, targeted priests and religious figures, viewing them as supporters of the Nationalist cause. It was during this tumultuous time that the Martyrs of La Tejera became victims of religious persecution. On 18 August 1936, in the small town of La Tejera, Tineo, in the region of Asturias, Spain, these four priests and one friar were captured due to their religious vocations. They were known for their pastoral work, providing spiritual guidance and sacraments to the faithful. However, their dedication to their ministry made them targets of the Republican forces. The Martyrs of La Tejera were accused of being counter-revolutionaries and enemies of the people. They were imprisoned, subjected to harsh interrogations, and ultimately sentenced to death for their refusal to renounce their religious beliefs and abandon their vocation. The martyrs faced their impending execution with courage and faith, remaining steadfast in their commitment to Christ. On 18 August 1936, the Martyrs of La Tejera were executed, bearing witness to their faith until the end. Their deaths serve as a powerful reminder of the persecution endured by many during a dark period in Spanish history. Following their deaths, the memory of the Martyrs of La Tejera was preserved by the faithful who recognized their holiness and dedication to the Church. On 26 June 2006, Pope Benedict XVI declared their martyrdom through a decree, acknowledging their heroic witness in the face of persecution. They were officially beatified on 28 October 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI. Though the Martyrs of La Tejera do not currently have a formal patronage, their example of martyrdom and devotion make them worthy intercessors for all those who face persecution for their faith. The feast day of the Martyrs of La Tejera is celebrated on 18 August, the anniversary of their martyrdom. On this day, the faithful remember their sacrifice and draw inspiration from their unwavering faith in the face of adversity. Their lives serve as an example of courage and devotion, reminding us of the power of faith to overcome even the darkest of times.
