Feast Day: July 28
Death: July 28, 1936
The Martyrs of Fernán Caballero, also known as the Claretian Martyrs of Fernán Caballero, were a group of fourteen Claretian clerics who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. The names of these heroic individuals are as follows: Abelardo García Palacios, Angel López Martínez, Angel Pérez Murillo, Antonio Lasa Vidauretta, Antonio Orrego Fuentes, Cándido Catalán Lasala, Claudio López Martínez, Gabriel Barriopedro Tejedor, Jesús Aníbal Gómez y Gómez, Melecio Pardo Llorente, Otilio Del Amo Palomino, Primitivo Berrocoso Maillo, Tomás Cordero y Cordero, and Vicente Robles Gómez. These fourteen Claretians were dedicated priests who had devoted their lives to the service of God and the Catholic Church. They were known for their piety, zeal, and commitment to their congregations. Each one of them contributed to the spiritual growth and well-being of the communities they served. Tragically, their lives were cut short on 28 July 1936, in Fernán Caballero, Ciudad Real, Spain, during the Spanish Civil War. At that time, their devotion to their faith and their refusal to renounce their religious beliefs led to their persecution and ultimate martyrdom. The circumstances surrounding their deaths were marked by great violence and brutality. Their martyrdom was recognized by the Catholic Church, and they were officially venerated on 1 July 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI, who decreed their martyrdom. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified them, bestowing upon them the title of Blessed Martyrs of Fernán Caballero. As of now, the Martyrs of Fernán Caballero do not have a specific patronage associated with them. However, their courageous example of faith and commitment to their beliefs continues to inspire and guide many Catholics around the world. Their feast day is observed on 28 July, serving as a reminder of their sacrifice and an opportunity for the faithful to seek their intercession and honor their memory. The Martyrs of Fernán Caballero stand as shining examples of true discipleship, serving as a source of inspiration and strength for all those who face persecution or challenges in their own faith journeys.
