Feast Day: August 8
Death: August 8, 1936
The Martyrs of El Saler, also known as the Five Nuns of El Saler, were a courageous group of women who dedicated their lives to teaching and serving others. Their names were Antonia Riba Mestres, Maria Baldillou Bullit, María Luisa Girón Romera, Nazaria Gómez Lezaun, and Pascuala Gallén Martí. These five nuns were all members of the Sisters of the Pious Schools, a religious congregation founded by Saint Paula Montal Fornés. As members of this congregation, their primary mission was education, and they worked as teachers, devoting their talents and energies to shaping young minds and molding future generations. The Martyrs of El Saler met their untimely fate during the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense religious and political conflict in Spain. The war profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals, both religious and secular. Sadly, these five nuns were not spared from the violence and persecution that prevailed during this turbulent time. On 8 August 1936, in the small town of El Saler, located in Valencia, Spain, the lives of Antonia Riba Mestres, Maria Baldillou Bullit, María Luisa Girón Romera, Nazaria Gómez Lezaun, and Pascuala Gallén Martí were tragically cut short. They were martyred for their faith, bravely enduring persecution and violence inflicted upon them due to their religious vocation. Recognizing the faith and dedication these women exhibited in the face of adversity, Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom on 28 June 1999, officially recognizing them as martyrs of the Catholic Church. Their beatification took place on 11 March 2001, further highlighting their status as exemplary models of faith and devotion. As of now, there is no particular representation or patronage officially attributed to the Martyrs of El Saler. However, their lives and martyrdom serve as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the unwavering commitment to their religious calling. Their feast day is commemorated on 8 August, the anniversary of their martyrdom. On this day, the faithful remember and honor these brave women who sacrificed their lives for their faith. The Martyrs of El Saler continue to inspire believers around the world, reminding us of the importance of standing up for our convictions, even in the face of persecution and adversity. May their legacy serve as a beacon of hope and courage for all.
