Feast Day: July 23
Death: July 22, 1936
The Martyrs of Carabanchel Bajo, also known as the Passionist Martyrs or the Carabanchel Martyrs, were a group of nine individuals who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. They were all members of the Passionist religious congregation and their deep faith and commitment to their vocation ultimately led to their sacrifice. The names of the Martyrs of Carabanchel Bajo are Anacario Benito Nozal, Felipe Ruiz Fraile, Felipe Valcobado Granado, José Osés Sainz, José Ruiz Martinez, Julio Mediavilla Concejero, Laurino Proaño Cuesta, Manuel Pérez Jiménez, and Maurilio Macho Rodríguez. Each one of them chose to dedicate their lives to serving God as priests, brothers, or clerics. On 22 July 1936, in the town of Carabanchel Bajo, located in the suburbs of Madrid, Spain, these nine individuals were captured and martyred for their faith. The city was engulfed in the turmoil of the Spanish Civil War, and religious persecution was rampant. The perpetrators targeted individuals who were openly practicing their Catholic faith, considering them enemies of the state. Despite the dangers they faced, the Martyrs of Carabanchel Bajo remained steadfast in their faith and continued to carry out their duties as religious figures. They remained true to their commitment to spreading the Gospel message, providing spiritual comfort to those in need, and defending the rights of the Church and its followers. The Martyrs of Carabanchel Bajo were known for their profound love for God and their unwavering dedication to their religious calling. In the face of imprisonment, torture, and ultimately martyrdom, they displayed tremendous courage and strength. These individuals serve as a testament to the power of faith and demonstrate the lengths to which individuals can go to uphold their beliefs, even in the face of great danger. Their martyrdom did not go unnoticed, and their exemplary lives of faith and sacrifice were officially recognized by the Catholic Church. On 28 November 1988, Pope John Paul II decreed their martyrdom, and they were beatified on 1 October 1989. This beatification was a testament to their sanctity and the ultimate sacrifice they made for their faith. The Martyrs of Carabanchel Bajo, with their feast day celebrated on 23 July, inspire Catholics around the world with their courage, devotion, and commitment to God. They serve as an example for individuals who face religious persecution today, reminding them of the strength and grace they can find in their faith. The Martyrs of Carabanchel Bajo continue to be venerated by the Catholic Church as an inspiration to all believers who strive to follow Christ despite the challenges they may face.
