Biography

The Martyred Sisters of The Christian Doctrine, also known as the Sisters of the Christian Doctrine, were a group of 17 religious sisters who were martyred during the anti-Catholic persecutions of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Each of these sisters endured immense suffering and exhibited unwavering faith in the face of grave danger and persecution.

One of the courageous martyrs was Ascensión Duart Roig, a member of the Sisters of the Christian Doctrine. She displayed great strength and perseverance, remaining steadfast in her commitment to her faith until the very end. Aurea Navarro, another sister, also faced martyrdom with unwavering faith and courage. Her dedication to her religious calling and her steadfastness in the face of danger exemplified her deep devotion to God and her religious community.

Catalina Calpe Ibáñez, Emilia Martí Lacal, and Francisca Desamparados were three more sisters among the group who witnessed their faith even in times of persecution. Their unyielding commitment to their religious beliefs and their willingness to give their lives for their faith set an example for all.

Honorata Lloret Martí, Gertrudis Rita Florència Surís Brusola, and Isabel Ferrer Sabrià were also among the martyred sisters. Their unwavering courage and willingness to suffer and die for their faith made them shining exemplars of Christian devotion.

Josefa Pascual Pallardó, Josefa Romero Clariana, and Josepa Mongoche Homs, along with Maria Antonia del Sufragio Orts Baldó, Maria Dolors Llimona Planas, and María Isabel López García, were dedicated religious sisters who, despite facing imminent danger, remained true to their faith. They served as inspirations to all those around them, demonstrating incredible strength and conviction.

Maria Purificación Gómez Vives, Paula de San Antonio, Teresa Jiménez Baldoví, and Teresa Rosat Balasch were the final four of these courageous martyrs. Their unwavering dedication to their religious calling and their willingness to lay down their lives for their faith are testaments to their exceptional spiritual commitment.

The Martyred Sisters of The Christian Doctrine were beatified on October 1, 1995, by Pope John Paul II, who recognized their martyrdom and praised their heroic fidelity to Christ. Their feast day is celebrated on November 20th, honoring their sacrifices and commemorating their remarkable witness to the faith.

These brave sisters continue to inspire countless individuals with their unwavering commitment to Jesus Christ and their dedication to the religious life. Their courageous example serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the strength of those who choose to follow Christ, even in the face of persecution and adversity.
