Biography

The Martyred Dominicans of Santander were a group of nine priests and friars who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. They are individually known as Blessed Bernardino Irurzun Otermín, Blessed Eleuterio Marne Mansilla, Blessed Eliseo Miguel Lagro, Blessed Enrique Cañal Gómez, Blessed Enrique Izquierdo Palacios, Blessed José María García Tabar, Blessed Manuel Gutiérrez Ceballos, Blessed Miguel Rodríguez González, and Blessed Pedro Luís y Luís.

These remarkable Dominican individuals dedicated their lives to the service of God and the Catholic Church. Operating during a tumultuous period in Spain's history, they faced persecution and violence due to their religious faith. They were all based in Santander, Cantabria, where they carried out their pastoral duties, spreading the message of Christ and providing spiritual guidance to the local community.

Tragically, on 23 December 1936, these nine Dominican priests and friars were executed in Santander during the Spanish Civil War. Their unwavering dedication to their faith and refusal to renounce their beliefs in the face of persecution led to their martyrdom.

Their martyrdom did not go unrecognized. On 16 December 2006, Pope Benedict XVI declared these nine individuals venerable, acknowledging their heroic virtue and the sacrifices they made for their faith. This decree of martyrdom represents the Church's recognition of their ultimate sacrifice for the sake of their religious convictions.

Their beatification followed on 28 October 2007, again under the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Beatification is a significant step towards sainthood, indicating that these individuals are worthy of veneration and are considered to be in the presence of God.

While information about their life stories and individual accomplishments may be limited, their martyrdom serves as a testament to their unwavering faith and commitment to their Catholic calling. Despite the challenges and dangers they faced, they stood firm in their beliefs and paid the ultimate price for their devotion to God and the Church.
