Feast Day: November 28
Death: November 28, 1936
The Martyred Augustinians of Madrid, also known as the Augustinian Martyrs of Paracuellos, were a group of twelve priests and friars who were martyred together during the Spanish Civil War. Their names were Avelino Rodríguez Alonso, Balbino Villaroel y Villaroel, Benito Alcalde González, Bernardino Álvarez Melcón, José Peque Iglesias, Juan Baldajos Pérez, Lucinio Ruiz Valtierra, Manuel Álvarez Rego, Marcos Pérez Andrés, Sabino Rodrigo Fierro, Samuel Pajares García, and Senén García González.
These devout Augustinians belonged to the Post-Congregation and dedicated their lives to serving God and their communities. They were known for their deep spirituality, commitment to prayer, and their selfless dedication to helping those in need.
During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, which took place between 1936 and 1939, religious persecution and violence against Catholic clergy was rampant. The Martyred Augustinians of Madrid fell victim to this widespread hostility towards the Church.
On November 28, 1936, they were executed in Paracuellos de Jarama, a town in Madrid, Spain. Their martyrdom was a result of their refusal to renounce their faith and their unwavering loyalty to the Catholic Church.
Recognizing the sanctity of their lives and the ultimate sacrifice they made for their faith, the Martyred Augustinians of Madrid were venerated on June 1, 2007, by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree of martyrdom. A few months later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified them, officially declaring them blessed.
Their beatification serves as a testament to their exemplary Christian virtues, inspiring others to embrace their faith and commit themselves to the service of God and humanity. Although specific patronage information and additional details about their lives may be scarce, their martyrdom stands as a powerful reminder of the price many paid for their religious beliefs during a tumultuous period in Spanish history.
The Martyred Augustinians of Madrid continue to be remembered and honored on November 28th each year, their feast day, as a celebration of their courageous witness and unwavering faith in the face of persecution. Their memory serves as an inspiration for all believers to remain steadfast and faithful in times of adversity.
