Blessed Yosafat Kotsylovskyi, also known as Josaphat Kocylovskyj and Josaphat Kotsylovsky, was a prominent figure within the Greek Catholic Church. He was born on March 3, 1876, in the Lemkiv District of Ukraine, specifically in Pakoshivka.
Yosafat Kotsylovskyi pursued his studies in theology at the prestigious Pontifical Urban College of Propaganda Fide in Rome, where he graduated in 1907. Following his ordination on October 9, 1907, he began his ecclesiastical career as a vice-rector and professor of theology at the seminary in Stanislaviv, Ukraine.
On October 2, 1911, Yosafat Kotsylovskyi entered the Basilian novitiate, demonstrating his devotion to the Basilian Order of Saint Josaphat, a religious congregation within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. This marked an important transition in his life, as he embraced the charism and spirituality of the order.
Yosafat Kotsylovskyi's dedication and gifts as a theologian soon elevated him to the position of bishop. On September 23, 1917, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Premeshyl in Poland, becoming a spiritual shepherd to the faithful in that region. Throughout his episcopate, he tirelessly worked to promote unity within the Catholic Church and fostered a strong sense of identity among the Ukrainian Greek Catholics.
Tragically, during the rule of the communist regime, Yosafat Kotsylovskyi fell victim to persecution and oppression due to his unyielding faith. In September 1945, he was arrested by the Polish authorities for his religious convictions and courageously endured imprisonment. Despite the harsh circumstances, he did not waver in his commitment to his beliefs.
On November 17, 1947, Yosafat Kotsylovskyi was martyred in prison in Kiev, Ukraine, where he met his untimely death. His unwavering faith and steadfastness in the face of persecution have made him one of the Martyrs Killed Under Communist Regimes in Eastern Europe.
In recognition of his martyrdom, Yosafat Kotsylovskyi was venerated by Pope John Paul II on April 24, 2001, who declared the decree of martyrdom. Subsequently, on June 27, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified him in Ukraine, underscoring the significance of his sacrifice and his enduring legacy as a model of faith.
