Birth: September 4, 1914
Death: July 1, 23
Blessed Xavier Bordas Piferrer, also known as Xavier Bordas Piferrer, was born on September 4, 1914, in San Pol de Mar, Barcelona, Spain. He came from a pious family and received a solid education under the guidance of the Salesians. Influenced by their teachings and inspired by their mission, Xavier decided to join the Salesian Society in 1932.
After entering the Society of Salesians of Don Bosco, Xavier embarked on his priestly studies. He pursued his philosophical studies at the prestigious Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. There, he immersed himself in theological and philosophical teachings, deepening his spiritual knowledge and understanding.
Father Xavier, as he was known after his ordination to the priesthood, had a strong desire to return to his homeland and serve his people. However, the brutalities of the Spanish Civil War disrupted his plans. While on a break from his studies and back in Spain, Father Xavier was unjustly imprisoned for several days due to his association with the Catholic Church.
Tragically, on July 23, 1936, in Sarria, Barcelona, Spain, Father Xavier was executed as a result of the persecutions that targeted priests during the Spanish Civil War. His only "crime" was his commitment to his priestly vocation and his unwavering faith in the face of adversity. He became one of the Martyred Salesians of Valencia, Catalunya, and Aragón, commemorated on July 24 and September 22.
In recognition of his martyrdom and faithful witness, Father Xavier Bordas Piferrer was venerated on December 20, 1999, by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree of martyrdom. Further affirming his profound commitment and sacrifice, Father Xavier was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 11, 2001.
Blessed Xavier Bordas Piferrer is celebrated as an example of courage, dedication, and faithfulness to God, even in the face of persecution. Catholics around the world honor his memory on his feast days and remember his ultimate sacrifice in the Spanish Civil War. His life serves as an inspiration for all those who face adversity and strive to remain steadfast in their beliefs.
