Biography

Blessed Wladyslaw Demski, also known as Ladislao Demski and Ladislaus Demski, was born on 5 August 1884 in Sztum, Pomorskie, Poland. He grew up to become a renowned professor of classical languages and later decided to dedicate his life to the priesthood. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in the Archdiocese of Gniezno, Poland.

Father Demski served in the parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary church in Inowroclaw, Poland, where he lived a life of faith and devotion, taking care of his parishioners and guiding them in their spiritual journey. He was highly respected and loved by the local community for his wisdom, piety, and compassion.

Tragically, Father Demski's life took a dramatic turn as World War II enveloped Europe and Poland fell under Nazi occupation. On 2 November 1939, he was arrested by the occupying forces and taken to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp located in Oranienburg, Germany.

During his time in the concentration camp, Father Demski faced unimaginable suffering. He was subjected to physical and psychological abuse, enduring torture and torment at the hands of the camp guards. Despite the severe hardships he endured, Father Demski remained steadfast in his faith and refused to relinquish his devotion to the Catholic Church.

In a particularly poignant and significant test of his faith, Father Demski was ordered by the camp guards to trample on his rosary, a symbol of his religious devotion. With unwavering conviction, he refused to comply with this demand, choosing to hold onto his faith even in the face of imminent danger and death.

On 28 May 1940, Father Demski was brutally tortured to death in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. His martyrdom stands as a testimony to his unwavering faith, courage, and refusal to abandon his beliefs.

Blessed Wladyslaw Demski, along with 107 other martyrs of World War II, was officially recognized for his sacrifice and sanctity by Pope John Paul II. On 26 March 1999, the Pope declared him venerable, and on 13 June 1999, he beatified him, acknowledging his martyrdom and his exemplary life of faith.
