Biography

Blessed William Tirry, also known as Guglielmo Tirry, Liam Tuiridh, and William Tirrey, was born in Cork, Ireland in 1608. He was the son of John and Joan Tirry and grew up in a devout Catholic family.

Showing great intellectual promise, William pursued his studies in Valladolid, Spain, and later in Paris, France. It was during his time in Paris that he embraced the calling to become an Augustinian priest. After completing his education, he returned to Ireland in 1630, where he dedicated himself to serving the Catholic community.

Upon his return, Blessed William Tirry began working as a secretary for his uncle, who was the bishop of Cork. He faithfully served in this role for many years, ensuring the smooth functioning of the diocese while also carrying out his own ministerial duties.

In 1654, Blessed William Tirry was assigned to Fethard, Tipperary. However, his work as a priest in a time of intense religious persecution put him in great danger. On Holy Saturday, 25 March 1654, he was arrested for the crime of being a priest and was subsequently condemned to death.

Despite the threat to his life, Blessed William Tirry remained resolute in his faith and commitment to his vocation. He became one of the Irish Martyrs, who endured persecution and martyrdom during this tumultuous period in Irish history.

Blessed William Tirry's execution took place on 2 May 1654 in Clonmel, Ireland. His genuine dedication to his faith and his courage in the face of persecution made him a revered figure among Catholics. His feast day is celebrated on 2 May and also on 12 May as one of the Augustinian order's martyrs. Additionally, he is commemorated on 20 June as one of the Irish Martyrs.

The cause for his beatification was initiated, and on 6 July 1991, Pope John Paul II officially recognized his heroic virtues, granting him the title of Venerable. On 27 September 1992, in a ceremony held in Rome, Italy, Pope John Paul II further elevated Blessed William Tirry's status by beatifying him as a martyr.

Blessed William Tirry's life serves as a testament to the unwavering faith and unwavering commitment displayed by Catholic priests during a time of severe religious repression and persecution in Ireland. His memory continues to inspire and strengthen the faithful, reminding them of the profound and lasting impact that can be made by standing up for one's beliefs, regardless of the personal consequences.
