Feast Day: July 4
Death: July 1, 4
Blessed Thomas Warcop, also known as Thomas Ward, was a devout Catholic and a landed gentleman in Yorkshire, England during the tumultuous period of the English Reformation. He was born in England, although specific details about his birthdate and early life are not available.
Thomas Warcop is best known for his selfless act of providing shelter to Blessed William Andleby, a Catholic priest who was hiding from persecution. In those times, practicing Catholicism was against the law, and harboring priests was considered a grave offense against the state. Nonetheless, driven by his strong faith and unwavering commitment to Catholicism, Thomas willingly took the risk of providing a safe haven for William Andleby, knowing the potential consequences.
Unfortunately, Thomas Warcop's actions did not go unnoticed, and he was arrested and subsequently accused of the crime of offering shelter to a Catholic priest. Despite the risks involved, Thomas refused to renounce his beliefs or reveal the whereabouts of William Andleby. His steadfast commitment to his faith and his willingness to face persecution and punishment ultimately led to his martyrdom.
Thomas Warcop was tried for his alleged crimes and found guilty. On July 4, 1594, in Dorchester, Dorset, England, he was executed by the brutal method of being hanged, drawn, and quartered. This gruesome form of execution was reserved for those deemed the most heinous offenders against the crown, particularly those associated with Catholicism.
Several years after his martyrdom, the Catholic Church recognized the sanctity of Thomas Warcop. On December 8, 1929, Pope Pius XI declared him venerable, acknowledging his martyrdom and his commitment to the Catholic faith even in the face of extreme adversity. Beatification followed shortly after, with Pope Pius XI bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him on December 15, 1929.
Blessed Thomas Warcop serves as an inspiration for Catholics and believers worldwide, especially during times of religious persecution. His willingness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of his faith and his commitment to sheltering a priest highlight his dedication to God and the principles of his Catholic faith. He stands as a shining example of courage, selflessness, and unwavering devotion in the face of persecution. Each year, on July 4th, the Catholic community commemorates his feast day in honor of his martyrdom and his sanctity.
