Blessed Wenceslao Pedernera, born on September 28, 1936, in Los Jagüeles, La Calera, San Luis, Argentina, was a married layman and devout Catholic of the diocese of La Rioja. He is best known for his dedication to serving the Church and his instrumental role in the establishment of the Movimiento Rural Catolico (Rural Catholic Movement).
Wenceslao Pedernera grew up in Argentina and developed a deep faith from a young age. He actively participated in various Church activities and became known for his unwavering commitment to Catholic values and social justice. As a layman, Wenceslao tirelessly worked towards strengthening the faith of the rural population in the diocese of La Rioja.
In the late 1960s, Wenceslao played a pivotal role in founding the Movimiento Rural Catolico, a movement aimed at promoting the spiritual and social well-being of farmers and rural communities. He organized meetings, retreats, and spiritual activities, helping to foster a sense of unity and solidarity among the rural faithful.
However, during a time of political turmoil and violence in Argentina, Wenceslao Pedernera became a target for his unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church and his advocacy for social justice. Tragically, on July 25, 1976, he was brutally murdered in front of his family in Sañogasta, Chilecito, La Rioja, Argentina.
Despite the horrific circumstances of his death, Wenceslao Pedernera's commitment to his faith and his martyrdom became an inspiration to many. His unwavering devotion to the Catholic Church and his fight for justice led to his recognition as a martyr by Pope Francis. On June 8, 2018, Pope Francis declared him venerable and subsequently beatified him on April 27, 2019, in a ceremony celebrated in La Rioja, Argentina. The beatification recognition was presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu.
Blessed Wenceslao Pedernera continues to be revered as a symbol of courage and faith, particularly among the rural Catholic communities. His life and sacrifice serve as a reminder of the importance of standing up for justice and the Gospel values even in the face of adversity.
