Biography

Blessed Vladimir Ghika, also known as Vladimir Ghica, was born on 25 December 1873 in Constantinople (modern Istanbul, Turkey). He came from a noble lineage as the grandson of Prince Gregory V, the last ruler of Moldavia.

Vladimir Ghika was a deeply spiritual individual with a thirst for knowledge. He pursued his education diligently, studying in various renowned institutes. He attended the University of Toulouse in France, the University of Paris, and Dominican university in Rome, Italy. It was during his time in France that he felt called to the priesthood.

On 7 October 1923, Vladimir Ghika was ordained as a priest in Paris. He had a deep sense of compassion and a strong desire to help others. This led him to establish the first free hospital in Romania, providing medical care to those in need. He also founded the country's first ambulance service, recognizing the importance of timely medical assistance.

In 1939, Father Ghika returned to the archdiocese of Bucharest, Romania. This was a crucial time, as World War II was raging, and the Romanian people were suffering greatly. Father Ghika dedicated himself to the service of his parishioners, tirelessly caring for the sick and tending to the needs of refugees.

However, his dedication to his faith and his compassion for others did not go unnoticed by the Communist regime. On 18 November 1952, Father Ghika was arrested by the Communists on the false charge of being a Christian. He endured tremendous suffering, subjected to torture, beatings, and starvation. Despite the hardships, he remained steadfast in his faith and refused to renounce his beliefs.

Tragically, after years of torture, starvation, and general abuse, Blessed Vladimir Ghika was martyred. He died on 16 May 1954 in Jilava, Bucharest, Romania. His death was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith and his selfless dedication to serving others.

Blessed Vladimir Ghika's courage and sacrifice were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 27 March 2013, Pope Francis decreed his martyrdom, acknowledging his martyrdom. Then, on 31 August 2013, Pope Francis formally beatified him. The beatification recognition was celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Amato in Bucharest, Romania, honoring the memory and legacy of this remarkable man.

Blessed Vladimir Ghika's life and martyrdom serve as an inspiration to all, reminding us of the importance of faith, compassion, and selflessness in the face of adversity. His legacy continues to touch the lives of many, and he is venerated on his feast day, 16 May.
