Biography

Blessed Vittoria Diaz Y Bustos De Molina, also known as Vittoria Diaz, was a devout lay woman from the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who dedicated her life to the service of God and her community. She was born on 11th November 1903 in Seville, Spain.

Vittoria's early education laid the foundation for her passion for teaching. She attended the teacher's college in Seville, where she excelled academically and received her degree in 1923. Following her studies, she felt a calling to religious life and joined the Teresian Institute in 1926.

After completing her formation with the Teresian Institute, Vittoria was assigned to teach in rural areas of Spain. She worked diligently to educate both children and adults, often teaching at night to accommodate the schedules of those who worked during the day, particularly women. Vittoria's commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as she founded a library to provide access to knowledge and learning for her community.

Alongside her work as an educator, Vittoria actively engaged in her parish and demonstrated a strong devotion to her faith. She organized a Catholic Action group, which aimed to inspire and mobilize Catholics to live out their faith in the public sphere, promoting social justice and Christian values.

Sadly, during the Spanish Civil War, which was marked by deep divisions and violence, Catholic individuals and institutions were often targeted. On 11th August 1936, Vittoria was arrested by anti-Catholic forces due to her unwavering commitment to her faith. Tragically, she was mercilessly shot in the early morning of 12th August 1936 near an abandoned mine located near Hornachuelos, Córdoba, Spain.

Vittoria's martyrdom exemplifies her firm dedication to Christ and the Catholic Church. Recognizing her heroic virtue and sacrificial death, Pope John Paul II venerated her on 6th July 1993 through a decree of martyrdom. Relics of Blessed Vittoria Diaz are enshrined at the oratory of the Teresian Institute mother house.

Through her life's example, Blessed Vittoria Diaz Y Bustos De Molina reminds us of the importance of education, service, and unwavering faith even in the face of adversity. Her feast day is celebrated on 12th August, the day she was martyred, and she stands as an inspiration for all those committed to living out their faith with courage and conviction.
