Death: November 18, 1936
Blessed Vidal Luis Gómara, known as the Dominican priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War, was born on November 3, 1891, in the beautiful town of Villa de Monsagro, located in Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain. From a young age, he showed great devotion to the Catholic faith and a strong desire to serve God.
After completing his early education, Vidal Luis Gómara felt called to religious life and entered the Dominican Order. He embraced the Dominican charism of preaching and teaching, dedicating his life to the pursuit of knowledge and the salvation of souls. Known for his exceptional intellectual abilities and his deep spirituality, he quickly rose through the ranks of the Dominican community and became a highly respected member of his order.
Vidal Luis Gómara's life took a tragic turn when the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. As the conflict intensified, the Catholic Church and its clergy faced persecution from anticlerical forces. Rather than abandoning his religious duties, Vidal Luis Gómara chose to remain steadfast and continued his pastoral work, offering support and spiritual guidance to those in need, even amidst the dangerous and hostile environment.
Unfortunately, his commitment to spreading the Gospel and serving the faithful eventually led to his capture. On November 18, 1936, Vidal Luis Gómara was taken to Paracuellos de Jarama, located in Madrid, Spain, where he bravely faced martyrdom for the sake of his faith. He became one of the many victims of religious persecution during this tumultuous period.
Blessed Vidal Luis Gómara's martyrdom was recognized by the Catholic Church, and his cause for beatification was initiated. On June 26, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI decreed his martyrdom, officially acknowledging his heroic sacrifice in the name of Jesus Christ. A year later, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Vidal Luis Gómara, raising him to the honor of the altars and recognizing his sanctity.
Today, the Catholic Church commemorates the feast day of Blessed Vidal Luis Gómara on November 18th. His life serves as an inspiring example of unwavering faith, courage, and dedication to the service of God and his people. As a Dominican priest and martyr, he continues to inspire generations of believers to live their faith authentically, even amidst adversity and persecution.
