Biography

Blessed Victoria Strata, also known as Maria Vittoria Fornari Strata, was born in 1562 in Genoa, Italy, to a devout Catholic family. At the early age of seventeen, she married Angelo Strata and together they had six children. However, tragedy struck when Victoria was widowed at the young age of 25 in 1587.

Despite her desire to remarry for the sake of her children, Victoria experienced a powerful vision of the Virgin Mary that convinced her to dedicate her life to a single life of motherhood, chastity, prayer, and charity to the poor. She selflessly chose to devote herself entirely to the well-being of her children and her faith.

As her children grew older and more independent, Victoria sought to deepen her spiritual journey. In 1605, along with ten like-minded friends, she took vows of religious life and formed a religious congregation known as the Blue Annonciades or Blue Nuns. With the support of a generous benefactor, they established their first house, which became the foundation for the growth of the congregation.

Under Victoria's guidance as the first superior, the Blue Annonciades rapidly expanded, establishing houses throughout Italy and France. The congregation was dedicated to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service to God and the community. The Blue Nuns became known for their devotion to the Virgin Mary and their charitable works among the poor and marginalized.

Blessed Victoria Strata dedicated the rest of her life to serving as the superior of the Blue Nuns, leading them in their spiritual growth and charitable endeavors. Her leadership and exemplary life of virtue inspired many others to join the congregation, as they witnessed the profound impact of her faith and dedication.

Victoria's life was marked by deep humility, selflessness, and a profound love for God and neighbor. She demonstrated the power of a life devoted to prayer, especially through her devotion to the Virgin Mary, and her unwavering commitment to serving those in need.

After a life spent in service to God and her community, Blessed Victoria Strata passed away on December 15, 1617, at the age of 55, due to natural causes. Her extraordinary virtues and spiritual legacy continued to inspire others long after her death.

In recognition of her exemplary life, Victoria was beatified on September 21, 1828, by Pope Leo XII. Her feast day is celebrated on December 15, though on some calendars it is also observed on September 12 or October 15.

Blessed Victoria Strata's profound devotion to God, her dedication to the poor and marginalized, and her leadership within the Blue Annonciades make her a true example of Christian vocation and a source of inspiration for all who strive to live a life of faith, humility, and selfless service.
