Birth: June 28, 1889
Death: February 1, 14
Blessed Vicente Vilar David, known for his unwavering faith and immense dedication to serving his community, was born on 28 June 1889 in Manises, Valencia, Spain. He was the youngest of eight children in his family. As a young man, Vicente received an education from the Piarists and later pursued engineering studies in Valencia.
In adulthood, Vicente married Isabel Rodes Reig, who became the main witness to his life and martyrdom. Together, they became an exemplary couple, spreading a Christian outlook and morality among their peers. Vicente's commitment to charity towards the poor was particularly notable, reflecting his deep understanding and application of the Church's social teaching.
Professionally, Vicente worked as an industrial engineer in his family's ceramics firm. Throughout his career, he maintained a strong sense of duty and integrity, which earned him several important municipal posts. In these positions, Vicente consistently advocated for the principles of Catholic social teaching, striving to create a just and compassionate society.
Vicente's commitment to his faith extended beyond his professional life. He was actively involved in various parish activities and Catholic youth groups, where he mentored and guided young people in their spiritual journeys. Recognizing the increasing anti-religious sentiment in 1930s Spain, Vicente courageously worked to shelter and protect priests and religious who were being persecuted during this time.
Tragically, Vicente's faith and dedication ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 14 February 1937, he was arrested for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic beliefs. As he was taken away to face his executioners, Vicente's wife, Isabel, bidding him farewell, said, "See you tomorrow!" To which he responded, "Until tomorrow or in heaven!" This poignant exchange captures Vicente's strong faith, his perseverance even in the face of impending death, and his unwavering hope in eternal life.
Following his martyrdom, the cause for Vicente Vilar David's canonization was recognized by many who studied his life. It was believed that his exemplary life should be celebrated and emulated, not just his martyrdom. Consequently, on 6 July 1993, Pope John Paul II decreed his martyrdom, granting him the title of "Blessed." Later, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II bestowed upon him the honor of beatification, further validating his sanctity.
Blessed Vicente Vilar David, a man of great faith, compassion, and commitment to God and his fellow human beings, continues to inspire and serve as a powerful example for believers around the world. His feast day is celebrated on 14 February.
