Biography

Blessed Vicente Gallen Ybañez, also known as Vicente of the Cross, was a Discalced Carmelite priest who was martyred during the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 29 September 1908 in Vallat, Castellón, Spain, and exhibited a deep devotion to his faith from an early age.

Vicente entered the Discalced Carmelite Order and was known for his piety, humility, and dedication to his vows. He lived a life of asceticism, valuing poverty and detachment from worldly possessions. Throughout his religious formation, he displayed a profound love for the Cross of Christ, which earned him the nickname "Vicente of the Cross."

When the Spanish Civil War erupted in 1936, religious persecution grew increasingly severe, with the aim of eradicating the influence of the Catholic Church. Father Vicente and many other priests and religious were targeted for their faith. Despite the looming danger, he refused to renounce his religious beliefs and continued to serve the faithful, providing spiritual solace and sacraments to those in need.

On 25 July 1936, in Tarragona, Spain, Father Vicente was arrested by anti-Catholic forces. This faithful disciple of Christ endured brutal tortures and interrogations aimed at forcing him to renounce his faith. Even in the face of unspeakable cruelty, he remained steadfast, offering a remarkable example of courage and fidelity to God.

Eventually, Father Vicente was martyred for his unfaltering adherence to Catholicism. He embraced death with a serene and forgiving spirit, trusting in the saving power of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross. On 25 July 1936, this devoted Discalced Carmelite priest, who bore witness to the transforming power of the Cross in his own life, shed his blood for the sake of the Gospel.

Decades later, on 28 June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI recognized Father Vicente's martyrdom, issuing a decree of martyrdom that paved the way for his beatification. On 13 October 2013, in a solemn ceremony, Pope Benedict XVI declared Vicente Gallen Ybañez blessed, acknowledging his extraordinary witness of faith and devotion until the very end.

Today, Blessed Vicente Gallen Ybañez stands as an inspiration to Catholics worldwide, particularly those facing persecution for their beliefs. His life teaches us the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith, even in the face of adversity, and reminds us of the profound strength that can be found in embracing the Cross of Christ.
