Biography

Blessed Vicente Alberich Lluch, also known as Brother Eliseo Vicente, was a devout Catholic and a faithful member of the Salesian religious congregation. He was born on January 29, 1906, in the town of Benicarló, located in the province of Castellón, Spain.

From a young age, Vicente showed great piety and a strong desire to serve the Lord. Recognizing his vocation, he entered the Salesian novitiate and made his religious profession as a member of the Salesians, a religious order founded by Saint John Bosco. His dedication and commitment to the Salesian mission were evident throughout his life.

However, during a tumultuous period in Spanish history, the Spanish Civil War broke out, bringing with it great persecution against the Catholic Church and religious orders. Despite the grave threats and dangers faced by Catholics, Vicente remained steadfast in his faith and continued to serve the Church with unwavering devotion.

Tragically, it was during this challenging time that Vicente was martyred for his faith. On August 23, 1936, in the town of Valderrobles, located in the province of Teruel, Spain, he sacrificially gave his life as a witness to Christ. The circumstances of his martyrdom were a testament to his steadfast commitment to the Catholic Church, even in the face of grave danger.

Blessed Vicente Alberich Lluch's extraordinary witness to his faith resonated with the Catholic community, and his reputation for holiness quickly spread. Recognizing his martyrdom and the sanctity of his life, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on June 22, 2004, through a decree of martyrdom.

Further affirming his holiness and the inspiration he provided to the faithful, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Vicente Alberich Lluch on October 28, 2007. The beatification ceremony was a testament to his courageous and unwavering commitment to Christ, even in the face of persecution and death.

As a Salesian martyr, Blessed Vicente Alberich Lluch continues to be remembered as a shining example of faith, sacrifice, and devotion to the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on August 23rd each year, commemorating the day he laid down his life for his beliefs. Today, the faithful continue to turn to him as an intercessor and a source of inspiration for their own spiritual journeys.
