Biography

Blessed Vicenta Achurra Gogenola, also known as Daniela de San Bernabé or Daniela of Saint Barnabas, was born on 4 April 1890 in Berriat√∫a, Vizcaya, Spain. She dedicated her life to serving God and others, ultimately becoming a revered figure in the Catholic Church.

In 1910, Vicenta Achurra Gogenola joined the Carmelite Missionaries, a religious order that focused on following the teachings of Jesus Christ and spreading the message of love and compassion. After several years of preparation, she began her formal novitiate at Gracia-Barcelona, Spain, in 1915. During this crucial period of spiritual development, she deepened her commitment to her religious calling.

Vicenta Achurra Gogenola professed her religious vows in 1916, publicly accepting her role as a Carmelite Missionary. Her dedication to her vocation was unwavering, and in 1921, she made perpetual vows, cementing her lifelong commitment to God and the Catholic Church.

Known for her strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Blessed Vicenta Achurra Gogenola embodied the virtues of love, mercy, and devotion. She tirelessly put her faith into action, seeking to improve the lives of those in need.

Throughout her life, Blessed Vicenta Achurra Gogenola took on various roles, exemplifying her selflessness and compassion. She worked at the Las Corts mental hospital, offering solace and care to those afflicted with mental illness. She also served at the Badalona Asylum, extending her kindness to those in desperate situations.

In addition to her work in institutions, Vicenta Achurra Gogenola dedicated her time to the Amparo de Santa Lucia house for the blind in Barcelona. Her assistance brought light and support to individuals facing a life of visual impairment, providing them with a sense of hope and empowerment.

Later in her life, Blessed Vicenta Achurra Gogenola focused on home care for the sick from the Carmelite motherhouse in Barcelona. By attending to those who were ill or infirm, she embodied the teachings of Jesus, who taught his disciples to love one another and offer comfort to those in distress.

Tragically, during the Spanish Civil War, Vicenta Achurra Gogenola fell victim to the violence and persecution carried out by the Communist "Red Committee." On 31 July 1936, she was martyred, bravely giving her life for her faith and her commitment to serving others.

The unwavering faith and selfless acts of Vicenta Achurra Gogenola left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her exemplary life of service and sacrifice came to be recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 22 June 2004, Pope John Paul II officially declared her venerable, acknowledging her heroic virtues.

Further recognition of her sanctity came on 28 October 2007 when Pope Benedict XVI beatified her, granting her the title of "Blessed." This honor testified to her exemplary life and the impact she had on those around her.
