Blessed Ventura of Spello, also known as Ventura Spellucci, was born into a wealthy family in Spello, Italy. Though he had been raised in luxury and comfort, Ventura felt a deep calling to dedicate his life to God.
At a young age, Ventura joined the Benedictine Italian Cruciferi order, known for their devotion to the Cross of Christ. Guided by his unwavering faith, he served the Cruciferi diligently, seeking to live a life of humility, prayer, and service.
Inspired by his devotion to the Catholic faith, Ventura embarked on a remarkable endeavor. He used his family estate near Assisi, Italy, to construct an abbey and hospital. This religious institution, founded on his family lands, provided both spiritual and physical care to those in need. Ventura served as the abbot of this abbey for the rest of his life, dedicating himself to the well-being and spiritual growth of his fellow monks and the sick and suffering who sought refuge there.
Throughout his lifetime, Blessed Ventura of Spello exemplified a life of selflessness, seeking to alleviate the suffering of others. His works of charity and compassion earned him the admiration and respect of the local community.
Ventura's dedication to caring for the poor and sick continued until his death, which occurred around the year 1265 of natural causes. He was laid to rest at the abbey church in Spello, Italy, the very place he had lovingly built and nurtured for years.
The reverence towards Ventura Spellucci and the recognition of his holiness continued long after his passing. In 1625, his relics were re-enshrined, a testament to the veneration placed upon his memory. Then, in 1778, his relics were once again re-enshrined, underscoring the enduring impact of his life.
Although no specific representations or feast days have been assigned to Blessed Ventura, his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the devotion he inspired. The faithful continue to look upon him as an example of devotion to God and charity towards others.
While Ventura Spellucci has yet to be officially beatified by the Catholic Church, his life and work continue to be celebrated and cherished by those who recognize his devotion and selflessness.
