Death: November 1, 9
Blessed Valentín Gil Arribas, born on 4 February 1897 in Rábano, Valladolid, Spain, was a devoted Catholic and dedicated follower of Don Bosco. Baptized at the tender age of only four days, Valentín grew up with a strong religious foundation. As he matured, he felt a calling to dedicate his life to God and joined the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious order known for its commitment to education and youth ministry.
Valentín entered the novitiate at Carabanchel Alto, Madrid, Spain, where he received the necessary formation and spiritual guidance to become a coadjutor brother. On 26 July 1916, he made his solemn profession, committing himself to a life of service and selflessness within the Salesian community.
Known for his hard work, kindness, and generosity, Valentín was assigned to work in and supervise the kitchen of his religious house. He tirelessly served his fellow brothers, ensuring that they were nourished physically and spiritually. His dedication and loving nature endeared him to those he encountered.
However, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought immense suffering and persecution for the Catholic Church in Spain. Valentín found himself targeted by the anti-Catholic militia and was imprisoned multiple times due to his religious beliefs. Surprisingly, the militia recognized Valentín's commitment to his vocation and determined that he would not renounce his religious life.
Tragically, on 9 November 1936, in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Valentín Gil Arribas was executed for his faith, becoming a martyr for the Catholic Church. His unwavering devotion to God and his willingness to sacrifice his life rather than abandon his religious calling exemplify the true essence of a martyr.
Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Benedict XVI declared Valentín Gil Arribas venerated on 26 June 2006. Later, on 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI officially beatified him, acknowledging his holiness and the exemplary witness to Christ that he displayed throughout his life.
Blessed Valentín Gil Arribas remains an inspiration to all believers, showing us the power of faith and the courage to stand firm in the face of persecution and adversity. His feast day is celebrated on 9 November, honoring his life, sacrifice, and witness to the Gospel.
