Blessed Urbano Gil Sáez was a devout Catholic priest and member of the Capuchin Tertiary Fathers and Brothers of Our Lady of Sorrows. He was born on March 9, 1901, in Bronchales, Teruel, Spain. From an early age, Urbano displayed a deep religious inclination and felt called to dedicate his life to the service of God and His people.
Urbano entered the Capuchin Order and was ordained a priest, dedicating himself to the spiritual guidance and pastoral care of his community. Known for his kindness, humility, and devotion, he touched the lives of many through his compassionate words and actions. Urbano's commitment to his faith was unwavering, and he became an inspiration to those around him.
Unfortunately, the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War brought immense suffering and persecution to the faithful. Amid the conflict, Urbano's dedication to his faith led him to provide solace, hope, and spiritual comfort to those in need, regardless of the dangers he faced.
Tragically, on August 23, 1936, Urbano Gil Sáez was captured by anti-Catholic forces in La Pobla de Vallbona, Valencia, Spain. His unwavering faith and refusal to renounce his religious beliefs led to his martyrdom. Despite the hardships he endured, he never wavered in his commitment to God and the Catholic Church.
The heroic virtue and unwavering commitment exemplified by Urbano Gil Sáez during his life and martyrdom became widely known, and his reputation for holiness began to spread. Recognizing his extraordinary faith, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on December 18, 2000, with a decree of martyrdom.
On March 11, 2001, Pope John Paul II beatified Urbano Gil Sáez in a solemn ceremony, affirming his sainthood and offering him as a model of faith, dedication, and martyrdom to the Catholic faithful. The beatification of Blessed Urbano Gil Sáez serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who stood firm in their faith during difficult times, thus inspiring others to live a life of deep devotion and love for God and their fellow human beings.
